Almost all Victorian tertiary courses require you to complete Units 3 & 4 of an English study (English, EAL, Literature or English Language) as a minimum tertiary-entrance prerequisite, usually with at least a study score of 10 (and many courses specify a higher cut-off, commonly around 20)

Unit 1

They also explore argument by analysing how persuasive texts use contention, evidence and language techniques to position an audience, culminating in the creation and oral presentation of their own point-of-view text .

Unit 2
Building on Unit 1, students deepen their inferential reading and analytical writing by engaging with a new set text type, examining ideas, concerns and cultural values through close study and formal essay structures .
They extend their investigation of argument by critically analysing a range of persuasive texts—print, digital or multimedia—focusing on structure, language and effect, and prepare written analyses and oral presentations to refine their persuasive communication .

Unit 3
Students apply advanced reading and viewing strategies to critically analyse complex texts from the prescribed VCAA list, exploring character dynamics, tensions and context through sustained analytical essays and class discussion .
They also experiment with mentor texts aligned to a chosen idea from the VCAA Framework of Ideas, using these models to generate, draft and refine their own imaginative or argumentative written texts, accompanied by reflective commentaries on writing processes .

Unit 4
Learners consolidate their critical reading skills by analysing explicit and implicit ideas, concerns and values in a new set text type, integrating metalanguage and contextual understanding into sophisticated analytical writing .
In the second area, they examine argument and language across print and audio-visual modes—assessing persuasion techniques and authorial context—and develop and deliver an oral point-of-view presentation on a contemporary issue

The end-of-year VCE English examination (Units 3 & 4) is a single 3-hour paper, set and marked by VCAA assessors, that contributes 50 per cent of the study score. All key knowledge and skills from Units 3 and 4 are examinable.

Here are some top study tips for achieving a high score in VCE English:

• Embrace feedback loops. Share drafts—whether full essays or individual paragraphs—with teachers, tutors or peers, then refine your work based on their comments. Revisiting your ideas again and again is what separates top performers from those who settle on a first draft.
• Collaborate, don’t compete. Treat your cohort as a resource: swap prompts, arguments and insights. Fresh perspectives from classmates often unlock deeper angles in your own writing.
• Prepare for every prompt. Compile likely SAC and exam questions, and for each jot down three adaptable arguments. You don’t need a brand-new idea on the spot—just tailor your rehearsed responses to each wording.
• Analyse evidence, don’t summarise. In argument tasks, focus on what 2–3 pieces of evidence per paragraph are doing—how they position the audience—rather than retelling the article or listing techniques.
• Maximise exam time. Use reading time to plan: decide your three analysis points and your premise for the creative/argument task so that when writing begins, you’re straight into the response rather than plotting.
• Study exemplars. High-scoring past responses are goldmines—read, deconstruct and adapt their structure and language to make your own work more strategic and polished.

VCE English (Units 3 & 4) is assessed through two components:

• School-assessed Coursework (SAC)
  • Unit 3 SAC contributes 25% of the final study score, comprising two tasks:
    1. An analytical written response to a selected text (40 marks)
    2. A creative or persuasive written text plus a reflective commentary on writing processes (40 + 20 marks)
  • Unit 4 SAC contributes 25% of the final study score, comprising two tasks:
    1. An analytical written response to a set text (40 marks)
    2. An analytical response to argument in a persuasive text (print/digital + another mode) and a point-of-view oral presentation (40 + 20 marks)
• External Examination
  • The end-of-year VCE English exam accounts for the remaining 50% of the study score. It is a 3-hour paper, set and marked by VCAA, covering all key knowledge and skills from Units 3 & 4

Assessment in VCE Biology is split between school-based work in Units 1–2 and a combination of school- and external assessment in Units 3–4.  For Units 1 and 2, all assessment is school-based and reported simply as S (Satisfactory) or N (Not satisfactory), with no contribution to a study score.  In Units 3 and 4, your level of achievement is determined by School-assessed Coursework (SAC) and an end-of-year external examination: SAC in Unit 3 contributes 20 % of your final study score, SAC in Unit 4 contributes 30 %, and the end-of-year examination makes up the remaining 50%.

English is the only compulsory VCE subject, so every student sits it, but that doesn’t necessarily make it “easy.” Unlike science or maths subjects, English doesn’t require mastery of technical formulas or experiments, but it does demand consistently strong reading, critical thinking and clear, polished writing under timed conditions.
