They guide students through the exploration of world religions, including their sacred texts, rituals, ethics, and influence on society. Our tutors emphasise critical thinking and analytical skills, ensuring that students can evaluate religious perspectives and their impact on social and cultural contexts. We focus on helping students achieve outcomes such as understanding religious traditions, analysing ethical frameworks, and interpreting the role of religion in modern societies.
Unit 1: Sacred Texts and Religious Writings
Students explore the foundational sacred texts of major world religions, including Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Australian Aboriginal spiritualities. They learn how these texts inform the beliefs and practices of each tradition and how they shape moral guidance and rituals. The focus is on understanding the role of these writings in providing insights into life and guiding adherents in their daily lives.
Unit 2: Religion and Ritual
This unit examines the significance of rituals within various religious traditions. Students investigate lifecycle rituals, such as birth, initiation, marriage, and death, as well as calendrical rituals that mark significant religious events. The unit emphasises the role of these rituals in expressing core beliefs and maintaining community cohesion within different faiths.
Unit 3: Religious Ethics
Students delve into the ethical principles of religious traditions and how these principles inform responses to social and moral issues. They explore topics such as social ethics and ethical relationships, examining how religious teachings shape perspectives on issues like justice, human dignity, and ethical behaviour in society.
Unit 4: Religion, Rights, and the Nation-State
This unit explores the interactions between religion and society, focusing on the relationship between religion and the state, as well as issues of human rights. Students examine how different religions engage with political systems and influence societal norms. They also study the role of religion in advocating for or against human rights and the ways in which religious beliefs shape perspectives on global issues.
