Our Design tutors provide expert support to help students navigate the creative and technical challenges of the QCE Design curriculum. Unit 1: Design in Practice

This unit emphasises developing skills in sketching and model-making to communicate design ideas.
Unit 2: Commercial Design
This unit focuses on designing for clients, considering their specific needs and the commercial aspects of design. Students learn about client communication, collaborative design processes, and the influence of economic, social, and cultural factors on design decisions. They develop and pitch design proposals that balance creativity with practical constraints, simulating real-world design challenges.
Unit 3: Human-centred Design
Students delve into designing with empathy, focusing on understanding the needs and wants of users. They learn how to gather insights through observation, interviews, and user testing to create designs that improve user experiences. This unit emphasises iterative design, refining ideas based on stakeholder feedback and ensuring designs are both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
Unit 4: Sustainable Design
This unit explores the principles of sustainable design, encouraging students to consider environmental impacts and the long-term viability of their designs. Students identify opportunities for sustainable innovation and work through the process of redesigning products, services, or environments. The focus is on creating solutions that are both effective and responsible, contributing positively to society and the environment.
