VCE scaling is one of the most talked-about yet often misunderstood aspects of the ATAR calculation. Many students wonder why their study scores change and how different subjects impact their final ranking. Understanding how scaling works can help you make informed subject choices and manage your expectations when results are released.

In this guide, we’ll demystify VCE scaling, explain why it happens, and show you how it affects your ATAR so you can plan your studies with confidence.

What is scaling?

Scaling is a process that adjusts VCE study scores to ensure fair comparison across different subjects. Not all studies have the same level of competition or student performance profile; scaling corrects for these differences so that a “raw 30” in one subject represents the same level of achievement as a “raw 30” in another.

Scores are scaled for a few reasons:

  • Fair Selection for Institutions: Universities and TAFEs need a standard way to compare students’ achievements, regardless of subject combinations.
  • Maintaining Equivalent Benchmarks: If a subject tends to attract high-achieving students who also do well in their other studies, scores for that subject may be scaled upward. Conversely, if a subject’s cohort underperforms across their other studies, it may be scaled down.
  • Consistent Ranking: By keeping each subject’s average aligned with every other subject’s average, institutions can confidently rank students based on their ATAR.

How are study scores scaled?

Although the actual details of how scores are scaled is quite complex, at a high-level it is quite straight-froward:

  1. Initial Study Scores: The VCAA (Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority) calculates a raw study score out of 50 for each student, in each subject. The average raw score is set at 30.
  2. Comparison of Cohorts: VTAC looks at how students in each subject performed in all their other studies.
  3. Upward or Downward Adjustment:
    1. If students in a particular subject generally excel in their other subjects, that subject’s scores are scaled up.
    2. If students do not perform as well in their other subjects, that subject’s scores are scaled down
  4. Creation of Scaled Scores: After these adjustments, each raw study score becomes a scaled study score, which is then used to calculate the ATAR.

Common myths about scaling

Although it may seem like this is unfair, often scaling is misunderstood. Here are some common myths about scaling:

  • “Subjects that scale up automatically give me a higher ATAR.”: Doing poorly in a “high-scaling” subject can still drag your aggregate down. Engaging in subjects you enjoy and perform well in generally leads to better results.
  • “Scaling is unfair.”: Without scaling, students taking more challenging or competitive subjects would be disadvantaged. Scaling levels the playing field and ensures a fair ranking.
  • “I can pick subjects just to take advantage of scaling.”: If you dislike a subject or struggle with it, the scaling benefit likely won’t outweigh low performance. Passion and competency typically yield better marks overall.

Trends in VCE Subject Scaling for 2024

VCE scaling trends in 2024 reflect familiar patterns, with mathematically intensive subjects like Specialist Mathematics and Mathematical Methods receiving significant upward adjustments due to the strong performance of their cohorts. Languages and some Science subjects also continue to scale favourably.

On the other hand, subjects with a more diverse range of students, particularly in the Humanities and Arts, generally experience minimal scaling changes or slight downward adjustments. While scaling can influence study score conversions, the key to success remains choosing subjects that align with your strengths and interests.

Let's take a closer look at the VCE scaling patterns for 2024.

Highest Scaling Subjects for 2024: “The Top 5”

Rank Subject What a 35 study score in the subject scaled to
1 Latin 50
2 Specialist Mathematics 48
3 Hebrew 47
4 Chinese Second Language 46
5 French 45

Latin tops the list, with a study score of 35 scaling up to a perfect 50, reinforcing its reputation as one of the most academically rigorous subjects. Specialist Mathematics follows closely, scaling to 48, a consistent trend due to the high-achieving cohort that typically selects this subject.

Languages continue to dominate the highest-scaling subjects, with Hebrew (47), Chinese Second Language (46), and French (45) all receiving significant boosts. This reflects the challenging nature of these subjects and the fact that many students taking them are already proficient or highly skilled in the language. The strong scaling of these subjects means that students achieving strong study scores are rewarded proportionally, helping to ensure fairness in ATAR calculations across different subject selections.

Lowest Scaling Subjects for 2024: “The Bottom 5” (Non-VET)

Rank Subject What a 35 study score in the subject scaled to
1 Foundation Mathematics 25
2 Industry & Enterprise 27
3 Karen 28
4 Product Design & Technologies 29
5 Outdoor & Environmental Studies 29

Foundation Mathematics sits at the bottom, with a study score of 35 scaling down to 25, reflecting the fact that it is designed as a less advanced mathematics option. Industry & Enterprise follows closely, scaling to 27, likely due to the subject's accessibility and the varied academic backgrounds of students who take it.

Karen, a language subject, scales down to 28, which is relatively uncommon for language subjects. This may be due to the majority of students taking Karen already having proficiency in the language, leading to overall higher scores and a subsequent downward adjustment. Meanwhile, Product Design & Technologies and Outdoor & Environmental Studies both scale down to 29, suggesting that the overall academic competition in these subjects is lower compared to others in the VCE system.

Final Thoughts

When selecting your VCE subjects for 2025, focus on your strengths—subjects you enjoy and perform well in will always be more beneficial than relying on scaling alone. High-scaling subjects like Specialist Mathematics and Languages can boost your ATAR, but strong raw scores matter more.

Also, consider your future pathways—check university prerequisites and choose subjects that align with your career goals, whether in STEM, humanities, business, or the arts. If you prefer hands-on learning, VCE VET subjects can provide practical skills and alternative pathways.

The best VCE subject selection comes down to a combination of strategy, interest, and ability. Choose subjects you enjoy, align them with your career goals, and ensure a balanced workload.

Good luck with your VCE journey in 2025!

What’s a Rich Text element?

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

How to customize formatting for each rich text

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.
